Earlier this year I was diagnosed with neural tension, which is a doctor’s polite way of saying “you have been sitting on your butt for far too long and now you’re paying for it.” I had been having some severe nerve pain in my feet and ankles, some knee pain, and some lower back and hip pain that at times was so debilitating that I couldn’t walk. On top of all this, and probably because of all this, my balance was practically nonexistent. Just to turn around in the shower I had to lean on the wall and move extremely slowly taking tiny steps until I faced the direction I needed to be in. I completed 30 sessions of physical therapy (the max my insurance would cover) and my strength and balance improved, but weren’t where they needed to be. My physical therapist gave me simple stretches to do at home and a few exercises, but I knew I needed more. Then I found Balance Exercises to Never Fall Again. This book is full of everything from warm up muscle stretches, to strengthening exercises, to a section on how to overcome the fear of falling. It includes step by step instructions on how to do each stretch and exercise as well as some alternatives. If people were to do the exercises taught in this book I believe they would lessen their chance of falling and increase their confidence in participating in the activities they enjoy. The book could use some editing, and I would have appreciated more illustrations as some of the instructions required some intense focus to understand what was being said, but overall I think this book will benefit anyone who puts in the time and effort to do the exercises it teaches. I recommend it.
